There is something truly sacred about placing a tiny seed into the soil, covering it with care, and waiting expectantly for new life to spring forth. A process that mirrors the very essence of my faith journey. This year, as my children and I began our little vegetable garden, I was reminded of the deep, spiritual lessons woven into the practice of planting and tending to a garden.
With tiny hands and wide eyes, my kids helped me press seeds into the soil indoors, their excitement bubbling over as they imagined the fresh vegetables we would enjoy in the summer months. We watered them carefully and placed them by the window, eager to see the first signs of growth. But as the days passed, the soil remained unchanged. No sprouts. No green. Just waiting.
And isn’t that so much like faith? We plant seeds in hope, trusting that something is happening beneath the surface even when we can’t see it yet.
“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9
God calls us to be gardeners—not just of the earth but of hearts, relationships, and faith. When we pour love into our families, invest time in our children, and speak words of kindness into others, we are planting seeds that, in time, will bear fruit. Sometimes, the growth is slow, hidden, or not quite what we expected. But in His perfect timing, God brings forth the harvest.
There is a holy patience required in gardening. We cannot rush the process. We can water, weed, and nurture, but ultimately, it is God who gives the growth.
“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” – 1 Corinthians 3:7
As my little ones check our seedlings daily, their joy at the first tiny sprout is contagious. I imagine this is how God feels when He sees us growing in faith, even in the smallest ways. Each act of love, each step of obedience, each moment of trust is a sprout breaking through the soil.
Gardening is not just about growing food; it’s about growing patience, faith, and gratitude. It’s about stepping into the role God gave us in the very beginning—to tend and cultivate the earth, to steward His creation, and to marvel at His handiwork.
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” – Genesis 2:15
This spring, as my children and I continue to nurture our little garden, I pray that the lessons of faith, patience, and trust take root in their hearts as deeply as they do in mine. And when the time comes to reap the harvest, we will not just be gathering vegetables—we will be gathering the beautiful reminders of God’s faithfulness, provision, and love.
So, let us keep planting, in the soil and in life. Because in every seed, there is a promise. And in every harvest, there is a glimpse of heaven.
Feel free to follow along on our garden adventure. I will be sharing more to my blog while I take a break from social media for Lent.
We have exciting plans to expand our garden this year! Here is the first sketch of whats to come.
