Educate yourself on the process of giving birth without medication

There are a number of ways to educate yourself on the process of giving birth without medication!

  1. Online courses or in books! This can give you a general idea of what to expect and help you to understand the different options that are available to you.

Here are some I recommend:

* I personally took the online course Built To Birth by Bridget Teyler. She really walks you through what happens in labor, birthing positions, how your partner can best support you, etc!

* Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin: This classic book is essential reading for any woman who wants to have a natural birth. Ina May is one of the world’s leading authorities on natural childbirth, and her book is packed with valuable information and advice.

* The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin: If you’re hoping to have a natural birth, it’s important to have a supportive partner by your side. This book will give your partner everything they need to know to be an active and supportive part of your birth team.

  1. Talk to people who’ve had a med-free birth

They can share their personal experiences with you and answer any questions that you may have. You can find these people in your personal network, in groups on social media or in your community via support groups and classes!

Speaking of classes….

  1. Attend a class or workshop in Harrisburg

When it comes to planning for a med free birth, there are a few different childbirth classes or workshops that can be incredibly helpful. For starters, taking a class on pain management techniques can be extremely beneficial.

This can help you to learn various skills and techniques for dealing with labor pains without the use of medication. Additionally, taking a class on self-hypnosis or relaxation methods can also be helpful. These can teach you how to focus and relax your mind and body during labor, making the process easier.

Lastly, another great option is to take a birth prep class. This can help you to understand all of the different stages of labor and what to expect, so that you can enter the birthing process with confidence!

Find a supportive care provider and doula

As a mother preparing for a med-free birth, it is important to find a care provider who will be supportive of your decisions and respectful of your wishes. The best way to find such a care provider is to ask around for referrals from friends or family members who have had positive experiences with med-free births. You can also search online for doulas or care providers who specialize in med-free births. Once you have found a few potential candidates, be sure to interview them to get a sense of their philosophy and approach.

Finally, trust your gut instinct – if you feel comfortable and confident with a particular care provider, they are likely to be the right fit for you.

I personally used Alexis Kenny from Deeply Rooted Doula. Another local doula I also recommend Lauryn’s Birth Doula Services. IF you are looking for a midwife, 10/10 recommend Zaina from Sacred Midwifery

Create a birth plan and share it with your care team

Creating a birth plan is an important step in preparing for a med-free birth. While it is important to be flexible and prepared for the unexpected, a birth plan can help you and your care team to understand your preferences and work together to support you during labor and delivery. When creating your birth plan, be sure to include your preferences for pain management, positions during labor, who you would like to be present at the birth, and any other questions or concerns you may have.

Stay positive and focused on your goals for the birth

Before you give birth, watch encouraging birth videos, listen to natural birth podcasts and blogs that speak encouraging words about birth!

I probably watched all of Bridget Teyler’s youtube videos! Her home birth was so beautiful

Ask your friends and family to only speak encouraging words to you about your birth and labor.

And remember why you’re doing this! Write down your reasons for wanting a med-free birth and keep them somewhere you can see them.

Practice relaxation techniques in preparation for labor

1. Breathing exercises: Deep breathing is one of the quickest and easiest ways to calm the nervous system. When you feel yourself getting tense or anxious, take a few deep belly breaths. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, letting your stomach expand. Then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this several times until you feel yourself start to relax.

2. Visualization: Another great way to relax is to visualize your perfect birth experience. Close your eyes and imagine yourself going through each stage of labor and delivery smoothly and successfully. See yourself breathing easily and remaining calm throughout. Visualize your baby being born healthy and perfect. Repeating this visualization regularly will help program your mind and body for the positive birth experience you desire.

3. Progressive muscle relaxation: This technique involves tensing and relaxing each muscle group in the body, starting with the toes and working up to the head.

Allow yourself to feel the sensations of labor, and don’t fight them. The intense sensations and fear of the unknown can make it tempting to try to numb the experience or fight against it. But, research has shown that this can actually increase the sensation of pain and prolong labor. Instead, it is important to focus on these techniques that will help you to ride the waves of sensation!
