Sunset & Horses: A Western Colorado Evening with the Smith Family

Colorado Sunsets and Family Sessions

Some sessions stick with you forever—and this one out in Fruita, Colorado was one of them. As the golden sun dipped low behind the mesas, painting the sky with soft pastels, I had the joy of photographing the Smith family in their element—surrounded by love, laughter, and two of the most beautiful white horses.

The Smiths are a family that radiates warmth. I could feel the tight bond between them—the playful teasing between siblings, the way Sara and Ryan interacted with their kids, and the gentle care they all showed toward their horses, who honestly felt like family members too.

It was so fun watching Kimber confidently leading her horse as if she’d been doing it her whole life. I could see the love and passion she had for her horse, an unbreakable bond.

The land around Fruita gave us the perfect canvas—wide open skies, beautiful mountains, and that warm Colorado light that makes everything feel a little more magical. We explored the property, chasing light and laughter. There were wind-blown hair, and soft moments of stillness as the sun kissed the horizon.

And those horses. They stood tall and regal against the setting sun, their white coats glowing in the golden light. They weren’t just animals—they were part of the Smith family’s story.

It’s sessions like these that remind me why I do what I do. Thank you, Smith family, for letting me step into your world for an evening and witness the beauty of your story. I even got to ride Kimber’s horse at the end of our session. BEST. DAY. EVER!
